Eri silk yarn is super soft with a delicate woolly texture. I mean super soft! It has a lovely lustre to it and is amazing to knit with. Popular for baby blankets, shawls, wraps, dresses and hats because of its moisture absorbent quality.

Eri silk yarn is also known as peace silk or Ahimsa yarn. The  silkworm breeding takes place under natural conditions and is not killed when harvesting the silk.

The production of peace silk yarn also allows the metamorphosis of the silkworm to a butterfly and the trees where the silk worm grows are not treated with insecticides or generic sprays. They grow in the wild so to speak.

In conventional cultivated silk like mulberry silk the cocoons are boiled with the larvae still inside, however if the cocoons are boiled after the larvae have left them the silk made is then called non-violent silk, wild silk, organic silk and Ahimsa Silk. The Eri silk worm is one of them. The eri silkworm is the only completely domesticated silkworm other than Bombyx mori

Eri silk is the product of the silkworm that feeds on castor leaves. It is also known as endi or errand in India.  This peace silk is a very popular fibre amongst vegans as the silkworm is not boiled with the cocoon.

These yarns are very rare due to the limited amounts of wild cocoons available as you will probably have worked out. They are also produced in small amounts each time.
